But Christ's Dice, I hate my braces. Right now I have a wonderful gash in my lip, because apparently my braces need more painful spikes in them than Penance's suit in Marvel.

To be fair, every time you visit the ortho it probably costs money.

Not all that hard, to be honest. Little plot happens in the first book. I'd suggest reading the wiki summary, because everything is going to be spoiled anyways.
