Just found out a slightly disturbing truth about a girl I thought was very nice, which is making me wary about the people I talk to online.

Basically a girl I know in RL made up a whole bunch of people who she 'knew', as she dated one of them when he was in Australia for his dad's work, introduced her friends to his friends (ah, the convenience of the internet) and continued to screw with their lives.
She killed two of the England people, sending her group into an emotional meltdown, then started a relationship between an England guy and one of her RL friends. Over a year later, much tears, time and effort spent between the two groups she revealed she made it all up, just 'cause she enjoys screwing with her friends I guess.
Edit in reply to your edit, which I only just noticed: You're not being nosy. It's nice to actually be able to talk about it, because basically they're trying to keep this from becoming public knowledge at school, which means total silence.

I really don't know. And she's so nice too. Or rather she seemed so nice.
I just don't get how someone could watch her friends go through that and /still/ continue.
