Wow, do you at least have housing and indoor plumbing?
I mean, I did a wilderness expedition, but at least we were allowed to bring a book along (one, then we had to entertain ourselves with medical handbooks and teacher's manuals) and could at least have cards, and write in journals.
Reccomendation: bring an extra-big journal and lots of pencils, so you have lots of space to write stuff other than daily entries. From the sound of it, you'll need that sort of thing.
Again, were camps and work seriously out of the question?
Yeah, I'm actually going to try to smuggle in 2 books - one disguised as a Bible (it's a huge book of all the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books and it has gold pages and a leather cover...with a fabirc cover over it hopefully they'll never notice) and the other hidden in my sleeping bag lining.
Anyone know if non-flyers accompany you through the Security checkline? Because my sleeping bag is a carry-on and I don't want my dad to see that I have a book...
Yeah, basically the other option was to go with my mom, who couldn't take us because she was out of work...
Non-fliers can't accompany you through security (because they ask for you to have your ticket available in advance before passing through), nor will the security people raise a fuss over putting the books in those places. However, I have no clue how thorough these mission people are. Best of luck with that.
If they do, scream that your bible is being taken away and that they shouldn't deny you of your faith. Then demand it at least be sent back to your house.
I had it at school and people know I'm not exactly Christian so they asked why I was carrying a Bible around and I told them, "It's better than the Bible."
