Protect the flock! From JP and Hachette!

Yes, another blog post by me. Shut up.

Non Timetis Messor

On a Dark and Stormy Night, The Reaper came to my abode

And because she could not stop for me, I kindly stopped for her

Not in cruelty, not in wrath, DEATH followed me along my road.

To reap my soul. No shock, no engulfment, no tearing asunder.

Standing before me was a grey angel, cloaked in shadows and light.

I smiled at her, and opened my door, as I calmly stepped aside.

Do you know me? So spoke she, stepping into my shelter from the night.

“You are the reaper, kind one. Please rest your feet, and rest your arms, for I am on your side.”

She stared at me, scythe and cowl and bone, a skeleton face inquiring.

Finally, she said, Please lie on your bed, for you should die at rest.

I shook my head, and quite calmly said, “I can’t rest, my friend, for I am still admiring,

The beauty of this world, so please wait a while and sit down, my guest.”

Perhaps you do not understand, mortal. I’m here to take your soul.

Spoke the being, when upon seeing, I wasn’t in fear of her.

I spoke to her kindly, “I’ll follow you blindly, and pay my due toll.”

“For you bring the high cost of living, a bill I’ll be willing to pay, I’m sure”

“Lay down your sickle and remove your hood, and rest your feet most weary.”

She did so with caution, looking quite faustian, all skeletal and licked with fire.

Seven foot tall, she stepped through my hall, but she wasn’t the least bit scary.

Click-clack went her feet, bone against stone, frame held together, as if by wire.

“Now please rest a while, and make yourself home,” I said calmly as I prepared the tea.

You are a quite strange, but you don’t seem deranged. You are not like the rest.

When I do come, Most people hide from, my horse and my scythe and my me.

Others run to me and beg for my gift, the angel confessed.

I gave her a shrug, and gave her a cup’pa, and gave her a kindly smile.

“I do not fear you, nor do I seek you,” I said as I poured myself a cup.

“You are my guide, no need to hide, I’ve already passed the worst of trials”

She sipped her tea thoughtfully, and I continued to smile, watching the steam billow up.

After a while, she said with a smile, you are kind. That’s rare in this place.

I just shook my head, and respectfully said, “No. I’m just aware that your role is to mend.”

“Our haunted souls, with unfulfilled roles; your job is to comfort our race.”

“You are not evil, nor are you a killer, but our guide and our love and our friend.”

She was silent for some time, before she spoke again. It’s time. Your life does end here.

I chuckled quite lightly, and spoke rather brightly. “End? This is just the beginning.”

She just shook her skull, as if she’d had her full, and spoke to me, speaking with sadness and fear.

Nothing happens after, for this is the finish. This is the denouement, the finale, the ending.

I took her by the hand, and helped her stand up.

I said to her, “Maybe. But even so. I’m happy to have been a part of this world.

I’ve done my job in this world. It’s time for you to do yours. What happens next is what happens.

And so I walked with Death into Oblivion.

On a Dark and Stormy Night, The Reaper came to my abode

And because she could not stop for me, I kindly stopped for her

Not in cruelty, not in wrath, DEATH followed me along my road.

To reap my soul. No shock, no engulfment, no tearing asunder.

Girl skeleton Death.

But I have to say, this begs the question - how would one know she's a girl?

Yeah, I figured, "We have an affable human goth girl death. And we have an affable seven foot tall skeletal male death. WHAT IF I COMBINED THEM."

So I was basically between an affable human goth male death and an affable seven foot tall skeletal female death. I went with the latter, as you can tell.

She's not, actually. The Death in this story has no gender. The speaker just thought of her as female. Why? Well...I don't know entirely myself. My theory is that he thought that since females grant life into this world, it'd make sense for them to end it as well. I enjoy writing characters who motivations I don't understand, and then theorizing about them.
