The part that fucked me up:
You get it from eating infected cow meat.
But you don't know if you have it until you get symptoms.
And symptoms don't show until years until after you eat the infected meat.
"Infected" is simplified -- what carried the disease is a funny-shaped protein called a prion.

We studied this last year. Chances of getting it are miniscule, even from infected cow meat. Especially if it's cooked right.
...Maybe Max and co have it from eating squirrel brains (wiki).... storytimez!!! -

We had about a dozen people get infected cuz they had brain surgery and the instruments were contaminated a few years ago. So there was this OMG CJD!! for a while

If I were writing 'Max dies' horrorfic right now, which I'm not, honest, I'd have her die of CJD. Or rabies. Or Ebola.
