Some of my friends, whose parents immigrated the US, had to wait ten years or more to become citizens, because the system is so screwed up. And they were legal. And it was hell to get the legalization in the first place.
And that's where the issue is, not loosening up on illegal immigration.
It's there, but it's also on the rights illegals deserve when they are here.
I think the process should definitely be easier...

>.> A majority of Americans are the descendants of illegal immigrants; if you're strict about it, virtually any white person in the US is descended from an illegal immigrant. The furor is over this: while it was okay for your ancestor James Whatever to come over here and kill natives to have a farm, someone coming up from Mexico, taking a job, and working his ass off to try and move up in life is bad.

Hilariously, this has been going on as long as America has existed :\ I don't have images on me, but I've seen cartoons from the mid-nineteenth century mocking Germans or the Irish much as we might Mexican immigrants today (you know, if "we" are racist assholes, but still).

The whole colonisation thing was wrong, we all know that.

And migration in itself is a /wonderful/ thing, creating diversity, moving populations, all that jazz. /Illegal/ immigration is not. It means that there a whole bunch of people who do not exist on any records living in the country, that the population may be increasing beyond what the infrastructure can support decreasing the quality of life for /everyone/, and since the increase is from illegal immigrants, with no way to stem the flow or control it until this issue is solved. It also makes it much more difficult for those who wish to legally migrate to America, as a country suffering from an influx of people are hardly going to be welcoming to other influxes, even if they are legal and controlled.

My great-great-grandparents were legal. They came from Russia and were processed at Ellis Island. My dad actually managed to find one of their names in their archives on a ship manifest--it was really cool.

Three-fourths of mine were legal so far as I know >.> The other fourth... English, so they probably killed 'em some Injuns at some point.

Both side of my family came to the US before Ellis Island was even being used as the main entry point. We are terribly boring.

Not /vehemently/ against it... Why?

Because I'm supposed to be debating for world civ that the costs of illegal immigration outweigh the benefits.

Do tell me your opinion. :D

I make it a personal policy to not talk about politics or religion after 8:00 pm.

Be glad. Many a morning I have suffered from "WTF when did I become a democrat?" hangover.

Plus, illegal immigration isn't my thing. I only know it at an elementary level.
